‘Barbie’ Track ‘I’m Just Ken’ Wins Critics Choice Best Song
Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Ryan Gosling won the Best Song award during the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. Instead of going up to accept the award, actor Gosling who played Ken and sang the song that won flashed a jovially perplexed look while his fellow award-winners took the stage.
“Ryan Gosling, this is as much your award as ours,” Ronson said. “You made the audience fall in love with this song with your matchless performance, so thank you.”
Ronson also thanked star and co-producer Margot Robbie, and shouted-out director-writer Greta Gerwig, along with her co-writer husband Noah Baumbach, for the opportunity to create the song. “The fact that you carved out 11 minutes for this prog rock, power ballad, dream ballet, shred fest so the boys could cry and hold hands a little, too, we’re really forever in your debt for that,” he told Gerwig from the stage.
“I’m Just Ken” bested fellow Barbie-nominated songs “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” The song also beat out The Super Mario Bros. Movie song “Peaches” fronted by Jack Black, Lenny Kravitz’s “Road to Freedom” from Rustin, and the Julia Michaels-penned “This Wish” sung by Ariana DeBose for Disney’s Wish.
Barbie garnered the most nominations of any film at this year’s Critics Choice Awards with 18, including nods for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Director — and it took home six: Best Comedy, Best Original Screenplay, Best Song for “I’m Just Ken,” Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Hair and Makeup. However, Oppenheimer ended up taking home the most awards, nabbing eight, including Best Picture.
