When the Apple TV+ series The New Look premiered in February, it brought with it the true stories of Paris-based fashion designers — from Christian Dior to Coco Chanel — navigating the hardships of World War II. But the show also offered a new sound by way of its Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack. The latest release from the record finds Bartees Strange reimagining the 1940s classic “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”

“Jack pulled a crazy group of musicians together to do original versions of some classic songs,” Strange wrote on Instagram when the soundtrack was announced in January. “I was very honored to do this.”

“You Always Hurt the One You Love” was first recorded by the Mills Brothers, who had reached the height of their success in Europe just before the U.K. and France declared war on Germany. The song, written by Allan Roberts with music from Doris Fisher, has been performed and recorded by artists spanning from Connie Francis and Fats Domino to Michael Bublé and Ryan Gosling.

Stranges’ rendition is the latest cover release from The New Look‘s soundtrack. The record also features Lana Del Rey performing “Blue Skies,” Florence + the Machine performing “White Cliffs of Dover,” Joy Oladokun performing “I Wished on the Moon,” and more. Bleachers, Sam Dew, Beabadoobee, Nick Cave, Perfume Genius, and the 1975 also appear on the album, out in its entirety on April 3.

The New Look stars Ben Mendelsohn, Juliette Binoche, Maisie Williams, John Malkovich, Emily Mortimer, Claes Bang, and Glenn Close. Episodes premiere every Wednesday on Apple TV+. The soundtrack’s release aligns with the season one finale.

“This will be the first release on my label, Shadow of the City, through Dirty Hit. I’m thrilled,” Antonoff wrote on Instagram earlier this year. “Loved every minute of re-making these war time songs with some of my favorite artists.”
