Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said the foundation is proud to be a partner in India’s unique effort in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality with the Alliance for Global Good – Gender Equity and Equality.

The alliance was launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year and its logo and website were unveiled in Delhi on Wednesday. The Gates Foundation was an early partner in the alliance.
“The focus of the alliance is on issues of gender health, education, and enterprise. All of them are very important to equitable development,” Gates said in the national capital on Wednesday.
The Microsoft co-founder said the initiative began with India’s “very successful” G20 and that rapid progress can be made on these issues, with government, private sector and the foundation’s resources coming together.
A number of other partners have already joined.
Supported by the Gates Foundation, the alliance is anchored by the CII Centre for Women Leadership, with the World Economic Forum as a network partner and Invest India as an institutional partner.

It aims to bring together global good practices, knowledge sharing and investments in the field of women’s health, education and enterprise and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals around good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality and empowerment, and global partnership for development, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said in a statement.Women and child development and minority affairs minister Smriti Zubin Irani said at the launch, “For the first time we manifest what government, the development sector and industry in partnership can do together with alacrity.”
Gender budgeting in India was up 239% over the past decade, she said.
She announced that the CII and FICCI will collaborate to provide instruments to compute and train professionals in gender budgeting not only in India but will also share them with B20, W20 and G20 partners.
Irani said nearly 500 dignitaries had approached India’s gender lounge at Davos seeking to understand its lessons in equity and equality to replicate in their own countries or organisations.
“In India today, we are historically well-positioned between the global south and the global north,” Irani said. “Since we are hoping to be a bridge, that bridge (should) be built on equity and equality. And what better to cement that bridge than gender.”
The alliance’s logo, which was unveiled on the occasion, forms the letter ‘E’, which represents equality and equity, while parallel strokes reflect collective action. Its form is inspired by Lord Ganesha.
“It represents a proud moment for India Inc. and comes with a sense of great responsibility. As the anchor of this global alliance, CII is committed to bringing in industry from India and across the globe to contribute to this effort,” said Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, CII.
