Botnets Can Shop! But to Mislead Real Shoppers
Planning to shop for Christmas. The Black Friday sale will live very soon and so the botnet army. Wondering what a botnet army is? They are zombie digital shoppers who will turn upside down your shopping experience. Botnets are essentially cyber-controlled systems infected with malware and viruses and are used for unauthorized access to remote devices. Botnets can steal information, cause information leaks, and DDoS attacks. The remotely infected devices will become zombie computers and often the devices are often tens of thousands in number.
In the advertising world, they are mostly used for skewing marketing metrics ruining the shopping experience of consumers and the marketing budgets of advertisers. Botnets are adept at clicking on paid ads costing advertisers lots of money and are hard for Google to detect. The fraudsters receive a share of ad revenue from advertisers who spend money on Google display ads. There are two ways Botmasters can use Botnets to cheat the system. Device-driven fraud and content-driven fraud. Device-driven fraud is easy for Botnets as it would need only impersonating a human on a website demonstrating real human behavior. Content-driven fraud is a little complex requiring botmasters to create fake websites for advertisers to post their ads on these websites.
Botnet fraud has given way to a number of ad fraud rings such as Methbot, drainerbot, and Hyphebot, etc, and has been operating for many years and it will vanish anytime soon. If your buying decisions are largely determined by the number of clicks a product gets, think again, for your co-shoppers were only here to mislead you.
