Britney Spears slams Justin Timberlake after he returns to shading her

Britney Spears on Thursday issued a scathing response to Justin Timberlake after her one-time boyfriend appeared to mock the idea that he ever owed her an apology over his long-ago campaign to effectively slut-shame her in order to promote his career.

“Someone told me someone was talking (expletive) about me on the streets !!!” Spears, 42 wrote on Instagram Thursday, Page Six and the Daily Beast reported.

“Do you want to bring it to the court or will you go home crying to your mom like you did last time ???” Spears added. “I’m not sorry!!!”

Spears had apparently became aware that Timberlake took a not-so-veiled shot at her during a performance in New York City Wednesday night, days after she tried to play nice, the Daily Beast said. Last week, Spears posted a video of Timberlake on Instagram, in which she apologized for “some of the things” she wrote about him in her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me.”

Spears also praised Timberlake’s new music, including his recently released comeback single, “Selfish.” She wrote, “I also wanted to say I am in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish.’ It is soo good.”

But Timberlake either didn’t hear about Spears’ apology, or he wasn’t moved by her apology, because he seemed to refer to her onstage Wednesday night, specifically to the accusations that he mistreated her after they broke up in 2002. Timberlake said onstage: “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize … to absolutely (expletive) nobody.”

The NSYNC alum then launched into singing his 2002 hit, “Cry Me a River.” In “The Woman in Me,” Spears wrote that the video for “Cry Me a River” unfairly painted her as a villain after the end of her and Timberlake’s extremely public relationship.

The video features a devastated-looking Timberlake invading the home of his unfaithful ex-girlfriend, who bears a  resemblance to Spears. The “Baby One More Time” singer said it bolstered the impression that she cheated on Timberlake and that it turned her into a “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.”

For her part, Spears wrote in her memoir that Timberlake pressured her to get an abortion when she was 19 after she got pregnant with his baby. She also admitted that she once cheated on Timberlake with the choreographer Wade Robson, but only after discovering Timberlake had cheated on her.

She wrote, “There were a couple of times during our relationship when I knew Justin had cheated on me. Especially because I was so infatuated and so in love, I let it go, even though the tabloids seemed determined to rub my face in it.”

Timberlake and Spears, fellow “Mickey Mouse Club” alums, dated from 1999 to 2002 when they were in their late teens and early 20s. The version of their relationship in Spears’ memoir threatened to damage Timberlake’s public image, because it challenged the “victim” narrative that he tried to tell about himself, according to Los Angeles-based public relations and reputation crisis expert Eric Schiffer.

“This is a body blow to Justin,” Schiffer said in an interview with this news organization in November, after Spears’ book was published. “Britney has the power to damage his legacy. I think this hurts his ability to be at the top of his celebrity game.”

As the Daily Beast reported Thursday, Timberlake is dealing with the task of earning back the public’s good graces before his sixth album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” arrives in March.

Incidentally, Thursday also marks the 20th anniversary of his and Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl performance, “which, along with his relationship with Spears, has contributed to the recent re-interrogation of his early career,” the Daily Beast said.

In 2021, Timberlake addressed both Jackson and Spears in an Instagram apology in which he owned up to “benefit(ting) from a system that condones misogyny and racism,” the Daily Beast reported.

But judging by Timberlake’s onstage comments Wednesday night, it looks like the singer isn’t inclined to do any more apologizing, as the Daily Beast said.
