Buc-ee’s, with its red-capped beaver mascot, wide array of food and beverages and 116 gas pumps, will open its newest travel center March 18 in Johnstown.

The doors will open to the public at 6 a.m. and a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local and state business and government leaders is scheduled at 11 a.m.

The 74,000-square-foot center will be the first Buc-ee’s in Colorado and the farthest one west. The store at 5201 Nugget Road, the southwest corner of Interstate 25 and Colorado 60, will be one of the largest built by the Texas-based company.

Buc-ee’s has 34 stores across Texas and 14 locations in other states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky.

“We picked a great partner in the community of Johnstown for our first store in Colorado,” Stan Beard of Buc-ee’s said in a statement Wednesday. “At the foothills of the beautiful Northern Front Range, this Buc-ee’s will introduce all sorts of bikers, hikers, skiers, and campers to the cleanest restrooms, friendliest staff, and freshest food they’ll ever find on a road trip.”

The company recently held hiring events in Loveland. The company has said it plans to hire about 400 people for jobs, including grocery and warehouse stockers; deli workers; cashiers; food and merchandise associates; managers; and janitors and maintenance attendants.

The pay is in the $18-$22 range, according to the company. Employees get three weeks paid time off, medical and dental benefits and a 6% matching 401(k) contribution after one year on the job.

Besides more than 100 gas pumps, Buc-ee’s will have 12 electric vehicle charging stations. The company doesn’t allow 18-wheelers because its travel centers are geared toward passenger vehicles, Buc-ee’s said.

The travel centers are known for their big selection of merchandise and food, including Texas barbecue, freshly baked pastries, homemade fudge, and beaver nuggets, which are caramel coated corn pops.

Buc-ee’s also boasts that it has “the cleanest bathrooms in America.” A Buc-ee’s store in New Braunfels, Texas, won “America’s Best Restroom Award,” from Cintas, a business services company.
