Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black Star in ‘Borderlands’ Trailer

0 20

Cate Blanchett is one of our greatest living acting treasures. Truly, what can’t she do? Well, in the new trailer for Borderlands she’s battling space aliens, searching for buried treasure and a missing girl, and getting drenched in the questionable waters of “Piss-Wash Gully.”

Blanchett leads an all-star ensemble cast in the movie adaptation of the video game series, playing Lilith, an outlaw who reluctantly returns to her home planet to find the missing daughter of a powerful weapons manufacturer. Though that mission is also accompanied by the potential of uncovering a legendary treasure buried deep in some mysterious vault.

Joining Blanchett/Lilith on this excursion is a motley crew that comprises Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, and Jack Black, who’ll be voicing the robot Claptrap.

The Borderlands trailer strikes a post-Guardians of the Galaxy balance of outrageous intergalactic mayhem and goofy humor (see the aforementioned Piss-Wash Gully bit). It’s even got its own Seventies arena rock soundtrack, set to Electric Light Orchestra’s “Do Ya.” Meanwhile, director Eli Roth seems to be striving for a kind of Mad Max, deranged desert aesthetic, but with some comic book/video game touches, rather than pure post-apocalyptic hellscape.

Along with the aforementioned cast members, Borderlands will also feature Édgar Ramírez (playing the big bad weapons manufacturer, Atlas), Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Haley Bennett, Steven Boyer, Charles Babalola, Olivier Richters, Janina Gavankar, Benjamin Byron Davis, Ryann Redmond, and Bobby Lee. Magician Penn Jilette will also make a cameo in the movie, having voiced a character in Borderlands 3

Borderlands is set to hit theaters on Aug. 9.
