Celine Dion Has Lost Control of Muscles With Stiff-Person Syndrome, Says Sister – The Hollywood Reporter

Celine Dion‘s sister Claudette Dion shared a new update on the singer’s health amid her struggles with Stiff-Person Syndrome.

In a recent interview with 7 Jours (translated from French by The Hollywood Reporter), Claudette said the 55-year-old “is working hard [to battle through her disorder], but she doesn’t have control of her muscles.”

Claudette added, “What pains me is that she’s always been disciplined. She’s always worked hard. Mom always said to her: ‘You will do well, you will do things as they should be done.’ There’s no doubt that in our dreams and in hers, the idea is to come back to the stage. In which state? I don’t know. The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle.”

She also lamented that there’s not enough scientific advancement yet to treat the condition: “That’s what is so upsetting to me. Since these cases are one in a million, scientists have not done that much research since it doesn’t affect that many people.”

Earlier this year, Claudette told Hello! Canada that the Dion family is “crossing our fingers that researchers will find a remedy for this awful illness.”

Claudette also shed light on the symptoms that come with Stiff-Person Syndrome, explaining, “You know how people often jump up in the night because of a cramp in the leg or the calf? It’s a bit like that, but in all muscles. There’s little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain.”

In December 2022, Celine revealed she had been diagnosed with the rare neurological disorder. “Recently I have been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called Stiff-Person Syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people,” she informed fans in an Instagram video. “While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having.”

She detailed some of the challenges that come with the disorder, noting that the spasms “affect every aspect of [her] daily life,” by causing difficulties while walking and not allowing her to use her vocal cords to “sing the way [she’s] used to.”
