Charli XCX Has Collaborated With George Daniel on Upcoming Album

While George Daniel is notably one of the masterminds behind the 1975, he’s recently been hitting the studio with another innovative British artist: his fiancée Charli XCX. The pair announced their engagement last month, but in between wedding planning, the singer’s focus is on her upcoming sixth studio album. In a recent interview on the Spout Podcast, Charli discussed bringing Daniel into the fold as a collaborator and what she’s learned from the 1975’s recording process.

“We’ve done a couple of things together. We’ve got a few ideas in the works,” the musician shared. “It’s funny, I have never been in a relationship with someone that I’ve worked with, so it’s like a whole new dynamic, but it’s cool … There will probably be a couple of songs that he’s worked on with me.”

Charli and Daniel released their latest collaboration together earlier this year when they teamed up with Caroline Polachek for their “Welcome to my Island” remix. “She essentially took the idea of the song and exploded it out into a whole other song — to the point that there’s almost no audio carried across from one version to the other. Charli is so wild like that, thinking outside the box, and that’s why I find her so inspiring as an artist,” Polachek told People at the time. “George, as well, flexing outside of a band context, who knew that he’s actually the hardest dance music producer?”

Charli and Daniel have also worked on “Spinning” with No Rome and the 1975 in 2021 as well as “Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies,” which the singer released last year. “They take a lot of time when they are making a record and generally in the past I have been very fast … That used to be part of my process, this spontaneous, instinctual thing,” Charli explained on the podcast about the contrast between her creative style and the 1975’s. Daniel is one of the band’s founding members and has served as their main producer and drummer since their earliest releases.

Charli continued: “Being around them, I have definitely adapted to the idea of sitting on songs, re-working things, playing them to friends, going back and forth and just living with the songs a bit more, so that is one way that my process has been perfected.”
