MG working on new electric vehicle

MG currently has the Astor, Hector, Hector Plus, ZS EV and Gloster in their line-up. They are now working on a new electric vehicle for the Indian market. Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director of MG Motor India has confirmed that they want to introduce an affordable electric vehicle in India.

The new electric vehicle will be priced between Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 15 lakhs ex-showroom. The development of the new product has already been started. It is expected to launch in 2023. It will be a crossover and will be based on a global platform that MG will develop. The electric vehicle is aimed at developing countries so it will be sold in mass-market.

Just like most of the other vehicles, MG would make some India-centric changes that will be based on customer preferences. This is important so that the new vehicle can get good sales numbers. MG will be able to price the new vehicle competitively because they will be sourcing a lot of parts locally.

Rajeev told PTI, “It is actually a kind of a crossover and this is going to be based on a global platform, which we are going to develop and this will be an EV for mass market for all the emerging markets including India. We will customise this car for the range and the Indian regulations and customer taste. It will be specially tailored for India. We will start working on it right now. This is the kind of tipping point that we have been talking about that if we are able to do a car between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh that can give us good volumes. So hopefully, this would be our volume EV car”
