Christian Nodal and Kany Garcia Duet at Latin Grammys 2023
Two vocal powerhouses just joined forces on the 2023 Latin Grammys stage. Música Mexicana star Christian Nodal and Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Kany García took the stage at the awards show to perform their cross-genre collaboration “La Siguiente.”
García started her performance alone, while surrounded by a band. Then, Nodál joined García onstage in an all-black outfit as the two showcased their vocal chops as they sang harmonized to the sweet song’s lyrics.
“La Siguiente” was up up for Best Regional Mexican Song, but ultimately lost to Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny’s “Un x100to.”
Nodal was also nominated for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album for his Forajido EP2, which he dropped in May. With the win, he took home the award in that category for the second consecutive year after he won the trophy for EP 1 Forajido last year.
“Thanks to Sonora for making bohemian and bravillo,” he said onstage, before thanking his team and congratulating the other nominees for “putting the essence of Mexican music at the highest level.”
Edgar Barrera, who produced much of Nodal’s work, is up for Producer of the Year, being recognized in part for his work on several Nodal tracks.
García has won five Latin Grammys in her storied career, including Best New Artist at the 2008 award show, when she also took home the prize for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. Her last trophies came in 2019 when she won Best Singer-Songwriter Album for “Contra El Viento” and Best Short Form Music Video for “Banana Papaya.”
Nodal spoke to Rolling Stone earlier this year about the exponential growth of música Mexicana.
“It feels beautiful to see what my people are achieving and how they’re killing it, that there’s people getting to know our culture through music,” he said at the time. “Whether you like the music that’s hitting today or not, you have to feel proud because that’s our roots. They are people who are representing Mexico in their own way.”
Among the performers at this year’s awards show — hosted for the first time in Seville, Spain — are Juanes, Rosalía, Eslabón Armado and Peso Pluma, María Becerra, and Feid.
The ceremony is airing live from the FIBES Conference and Exhibition Center in Spain on Univision.
