Christina Applegate Talks Multiple Sclerosis Battle, Emmys Appearance
Christina Applegate said she “blacked out” during her rare public appearance at the Emmys earlier this year in a new interview with Good Morning America about her battle with multiple sclerosis.
The full interview airs tomorrow, March 12, but in a preview clip, Applegate expressed gratitude for the copious support she’s received since being diagnosed with MS in 2021. But, she remained brutally honest about what life with MS is really like.
“I live kind of in hell,” she said. “I’m not out a lot, so this is, like, a little difficult, just for my system. But, yeah, of course, the support is wonderful, and I’m really grateful.”
Applegate received a huge show of support at the 2023 Emmys, where she presented the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. The audience gave her a standing ovation, and Applegate even joked about it in the moment, quipping: “You’re totally shaming me, with a disability, by standing up — it’s fine!”
When asked about the experience, Applegate admitted that she “blacked out” and barely remembered what happened. “People said, ‘Oh, you were so funny,’ and I’m like, I don’t even know what I said. I don’t know what I was doing. I got so freaked out that I didn’t even know what was happening anymore.”
While Applegate said she “felt really beloved” and called the experience “beautiful,” — she again hedged with some self-deprecating humor. “I’m just gonna say this: That audience stood up for everybody.”
Joining Applegate in the interview will be former Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who’s been battling MS since she was 20. Applegate and Sigler are launching a new podcast about their experiences, MeSsy, debuting March 19.
