CNN’s NYE Ratings Jump as Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen Got Drunk

Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen got drunk on air to ring in 2024 after dialing back the booze for the special a year ago

As it turns out, Anderson Cooper getting drunk and giggling uncontrollably on live television at the site of a cat’s butt in John Mayer’s face makes for good television.

The news network announced on Thursday that its New Years Eve special hosted by Cooper and Andy Cohen brought in about 2.33 million viewers this year, a 12 percent bump compared to the year prior, according to the network. This year’s broadcast ended the annual special’s short-lived prohibition, as the network decided to dial back the booze last year to ring in 2023.

This year’s broadcast was its second highest ever since it started in 2007, CNN said, only behind 2020’s special. Cooper’s infectious giggle while Mayer was in a cat cafe in Tokyo, Japan was perhaps the most viral moment of the telecast — with the anchor briefly going off screen as he tried to compose himself while Mayer was deadpanning.

“He’s gone, he’s off with the fairies here,” Cohen told Mayer as Cooper continued laughing. “Just the shot of the cat’s ass in your face is making him delirious.”

There was of course other memorable moments in the hours-long broadcast, like when Cohen called Cooper a “pass around party bottom” while interviewing comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

Viewership hit about 3.4 million by midnight when the ball dropped, according to the outlet. Aside from Cooper and Cohen, CNN also aired performances from artists including Maroon 5, Flo Rida, Enrique Iglesias, and Paul Anka among others.
