Consequence Says Jay-Z Was Interested in Signing Him

In the latest episode of Drink Champs, Consequence revealed that Jay-Z once tried to get him to sign to Roc-A-Fella Records.

At the 22:02 mark of the episode, as seen above, Consequence said that Hov approached him about working together when he was still signed to Q-Tip’s label The Ummah. “At one point, when I was still signed to Q-Tip… I was supposed to sign to Roc-A-Fella,” he said. “Well, not supposed to, but Jay was very interested in picking me up.” Ultimately he ended up signing to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music later down the line, but Consequence suggested that Jay was very serious about getting him onboard at Roc-A-Fella.

“I met Jay in 1995,” he continued. “And we always kinda, intermingled. We never had, like, a one-to-one direct relationship, but we always kind of intermingled. … He spoke to Q-Tip about me, and you know at the time me and Q-Tip was going through a lot of personal things. So we didn’t go that route, but I ended up kind of going that direction anyways. And I’m saying this because I’m actually saluting Jay, because you know we’ve had our share of troubles. But, he’s always seen the value in what I brought to the table.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Consequence suggested that he actually helped Big Sean during his time with G.O.O.D. Music. Around the 39:00-minute mark, N.O.R.E. asked him if he stopped Sean from getting dropped by the label, to which he replied, “100 percent.”

“I saved Big Sean’s dignity,” he continued. “I ain’t never tell no story of Big Sean that I know personally. Him and Ye, they did their one-two thing up here. I ain’t do that with Sean, but Sean was my ‘lil man when he got signed,” the rapper explains. “If you go to YouTube, you’ll see Sean get introduced as a member of G.O.O.D. Music at my show at the Knitting Factory. Kanye came out as a surprise guest, Q-Tip came out as a surprise guest. I had Sean and Kid Cudi, and that’s what they wanted.”
