Delhi: Only Electric, CNG, or BS-VI Buses from Haryana Allowed to Enter the State, Here’s Why

In order to tackle air pollution and promote eco-friendly transportation, the Delhi government has issued a directive that is set to transform the way buses enter the national capital.

Beginning November 1, 2023, all buses originating from Haryana must run on electric, CNG, or BS-VI diesel. Furthermore, buses traveling from the NCR regions of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will have to adhere to these stringent emission norms when entering the city from Wednesday.

Looking forward to July 1, 2024, this initiative takes an even more ambitious turn. From that date, all buses arriving in Delhi from any city or town in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh must exclusively be electric, CNG, or adhere to the BS-VI diesel standards.

This remarkable initiative, endorsed by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), is a testament to Delhi’s unwavering commitment to improving air quality by transitioning to eco-friendly transportation options.

The Delhi Transport Department has issued comprehensive guidelines in a circular sent to Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. “All state government bus services between any city or town in the state of Haryana and Delhi shall be operated only through EV/CNG/BS-VI diesel buses w.e.f. 01.11.2023. This shall also be applicable for bus services being operated by State PSUs and private entities, etc.,” states the circular.

These same stringent standards apply to buses coming from Rajasthan. All bus services between any NCR city/town in Rajasthan and Delhi, as well as to any other city or town in the NCR, must be electric, CNG, or BS-VI diesel vehicles. Buses originating from non-NCR areas of Rajasthan heading to Delhi are also expected to meet these standards, beginning January 1, 2024.

Uttar Pradesh is also part of this sweeping green drive, with the circular stating, “All bus services between any NCR city/town in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi shall be operated only through EV/CNG/BS-VI diesel buses w.e.f. 01.11.2023. This shall also be applicable for bus services being operated by State PSUs and private entities, etc.”

Furthermore, all 1,433 state government buses operating between non-NCR areas of the state to Delhi and NCR areas of other states must meet the BS-VI diesel compliance starting from July 1, 2024.

The Delhi Transport Department has made it clear that any deviation from these regulations will be treated as a violation of various provisions stipulated in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and could result in legal action.

The Bharat Stage emission standards are crucial in setting legal limits on the amount of air pollutants emitted by vehicles in India, encompassing carbon monoxide and particulate matter. These standards focus on improving emission control, fuel efficiency, and engine design. As vehicle manufacturers produce vehicles that meet these new norms, oil companies provide fuel that adheres to the BS-VI standards, known as the world’s cleanest fuel.

In preparation for this exciting shift in transportation, the department has deployed 18 enforcement teams at various border points to ensure strict compliance with these revolutionary emission norms, making Delhi a greener, healthier place for all.
