Diesels outsells petrol in a BIG way

0 65

Despite manufacturers stopping investing in diesel engines and selling diesel-powered vehicles in the Indian market, Indian customers are not giving in. For Mahindra, which purely sells SUVs in the Indian market, diesel-powered vehicles are topping the charts. The latest sales data show that diesel SUVs are still much more popular compared to their petrol counterparts when it comes to Mahindra.

Mahindra Thar

The petrol-powered versions of this off-roader are not as popular as their diesel counterparts, which have more torque. Compared to the previous year, the demand for diesel variants of the Thar nearly doubled, and it is four times higher than that of the petrol variants. Last year, Mahindra sold 2,294 diesel Thars compared to 4,298 units this year. While the brand sold 1,004 units of petrol Thar this year compared to 858 units of the car last year.

The increase in demand can be attributed to the introduction of the new RWD variants of the Thar, which are the most affordable with the new 1.5-liter diesel engine option.

Over the course of a year, sales of petrol variants of this lifestyle SUV decreased by over 8 percent. While total sales increased for both powertrains, diesel variants dominated with over 80 percent of sales in April 2023.

Mahindra Scorpio-N

At around this time last year, Mahindra had only the previous-generation Scorpio available for sale, which was solely powered by a diesel engine. Now, the SUV is offered in two forms: the Scorpio Classic and the Scorpio N, the latter with the option of a turbo-petrol engine. However, the majority of sales for this model come from the diesel variants. Mahindra sole 2,712 units of diesel Scorpio compared to 9,125 units this year. As the figures indicate, the petrol variants of the Scorpio are a rare occurrence, with the Scorpio Classic and the diesel models of Scorpio N accounting for more than 95 per cent of sales in April 2023.

Mahindra XUV700

The year-on-year sales figures for the XUV700 have recorded an increase of almost 5 percent. The sales trend indicates that there is a rise in demand for diesel variants and a decline in demand for petrol variants. As of now, petrol variants of the SUV only contribute to around 30 percent of the total sales.

The sales figure show that the brand sold 2,839 units of Mahindra XUV700 last year compared to 3,286 units this year. The petrol variants are far away in the race. Last year, the brand sold 1,655 units while this year, Mahindra sold 1,471 units.

Mahindra XUV300

The XUV300 stands out from the other models on this list as it has a more evenly distributed demand for both petrol and diesel variants. Nevertheless, in April 2023, diesel variants contributed to a larger portion of the sales, indicating a widening gap compared to April 2022. Despite this, in the subcompact SUV segment, the XUV300 remains one of the rare models to provide a diesel option that still makes up over 50 percent of its total sales.

Last year, Mahindra sold 2,035 units of XUV300 diesel compared to 2,894 units this year. The sales figures show that the brand sold 1,874 units of petrol variants last year and 2,168 units this year.
