Driving licence to be cancelled after three challans: Noida Police
In an attempt to curb violation of traffic rules and promote road safety, Noida Police has issued a couple of warnings, which can cancel one’s driving license or vehicle’s registration certificate in case of a violation. Noida Police has announced that it will be cancelling the driving licenses of those individuals who receive more than three traffic violation challans.
In addition to this new rule, Noida Police has also announced the cancellation of a vehicle’s registration, if repeated offences related to traffic violations are found against the vehicle owner. Noida Police has made these announcements following the guidelines of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. These decisions were then affirmed at the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Road Safety Council meeting.
In its official media statement, the Noida Police has stated that the individuals who will be penalised for offences like overspeeding, jumping red lights, using a mobile phone while driving or riding, overloading or driving/riding under the influence of alcohol will face cancellation of their driving licenses. The Noida Police also added that even after the cancellation of driving licenses, if such people are found repeating their offences, their vehicle’s registration will be cancelled.
Between January and September 2023, Uttar Pradesh traffic police suspended 7,070 driving licenses, compared to 11,693 in the same duration last year. Particularly in Noida, 14 lakh challans have been issued to people violating traffic rules in January-September 2023, including 66,867 for jumping red lights, 69,906 for overspeeding, 10,516 for using a mobile phone while driving/riding, 387 for drink-and-drive and 22,084 for triple riding on a two-wheeler.
The announcement by Noida Police has come at a time when the violation of traffic rules in Uttar Pradesh and the rest of India has reached new heights. In the Noida and Greater Noida regions, over 1,000 road accidents and loss of nearly 400 lives have occurred due to accidents that have happened because of traffic rule violations. As a response to such rising cases, the state transport commissioner directed the traffic police to come up with revised actions against traffic violators. Also, in a review meeting on December 2, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered strict actions against traffic violators.
