Emma Stone Says She’ll Never Joke About Taylor Swift Again

0 15

Emma Stone has learned a hard, but important lesson about rabid fandom and the context-destroying vortex that is the internet: It doesn’t matter how good your intentions are, or how good of a friend you are to Taylor Swift, it’s probably best to not make any jokes about her.

Back in January, Stone won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for her performance in Poor Things, and got an especially big cheer from Swift, who was in the audience that night. Speaking with reporters later, Stone was asked about Swift’s enthusiasm, and deadpanned, “What an asshole, am I right?”

Obviously, it was a joke. And obviously, any one who might be concerned it was not a joke, could just look up what she said next and rest easy that Stone was not actually calling Swift an asshole (even after she jokingly called Swift an asshole again). “I’ve known her for almost 20 years and I was very happy she was there,” Stone said. “She was also nominated tonight which was wonderful and, yes, what an asshole.”

Nevertheless, the quote inevitably garnered some bad faith (or just plain dumb) backlash. In a new interview with Variety, Stone quipped, “I definitely won’t make a joke like that again, because I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context.”

Stone then apparently pointed to herself and said, “What a dope.” (To be clear, she was joking.)

With her Golden Globe for Poor Things secured (along with a BAFTA), Stone has been busy doing the press rounds ahead of the Oscars, where she’s nominated for Best Actress and Best Picture (as a producer of Poor Things). As much as she’s been promoting the film, she’s also been pushing her trivia skills in a bid to get on Jeopardy! — and not the celebrity version.

“If you know that you applied, you took the quiz, you got on the show by actually having the brains to be on the show,” Stone told Stephen Colbert during a recent Late Show interview. “Not that Celebrity Jeopardy! people don’t have the brains, because I’ve seen some impressive candidates. However, I just want to know that I passed the test.”
