Engineer uses an Honor Magic6 Pro’s eye tracking feature to remotely control a car

0 21

The Honor Magic6 Pro has AI-based eye-tracking powered by Eyeware’s GazeSense software running on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. You could, for example, use it to select a destination on the map and zoom in, just by gazing at your phone. And now it can even start your car!

Okay, that’s just a proof of concept created by James Brighton, a UK-based automotive engineering expert. The idea is simple – hands-free control of certain features of the car by looking at the screen of an Honor Magic6 Pro. On the Pro in particular, the artificial smarts are helped along by the 3D ToF sensor in the pill-shaped hole in the screen.

You can start or stop the engine, even make the car move forwards or backwards, just by looking at the relevant menu item on the phone’s screen for 2-3 seconds. No, you can’t steer, but since you don’t have to be in the car to use this feature, you can use it to get the car out of tight parking spots.

Note that the eye-tracking tech is currently available only in China – and this is just a prototype, anyway.

Still, think of the possibilities – with this tech your phone could control other functions in your car, without having to take a hand off the steering wheel or using voice commands.

And this is just one demonstration of the what AI could do – Honor has more to say on the subject and will be hosting an AI Panel Discussion at the MWC (Monday, February 26 at 17:00 CET) with guests from Qualcomm and the GSMA.
