Foldable smartphone sales drop for the first time ever

0 25

Foldable smartphone sales have declined for the first time ever in Q4 2022. This is based on a report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). This is the very first year-on-year (YoY) decline ever.

Foldable smartphone market sales drop for the first time ever in Q4 2022

The sheer shipment numbers have dropped by 48% in Q4 2022, compared to Q3 2022. That’s a huge difference, needless to say. On the other hand, compared to Q4 2021, they’ve dropped by 26%.

Now, even though the fourth quartal wasn’t the best in terms of shipments, the entire 2022 as a whole has been a success. The overall shipments for last year actually rose by 62% compared to the year before. 12.9 million foldable smartphones were sold.

Needless to say at this point, but Samsung is leading the race. The South Korean giant has an 83% share in the global foldable smartphone market. That is less than it had in Q3, though, when it held 86%. A year ago, in Q3 2021, it held 96%, so others are finally grabbing some pieces.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 was the most popular foldable phone in Q4 last year

Another expected statistic is that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was the most popular foldable smartphone in Q4 2022. That phone managed to grab 47% of the smartphone market all on its own. Its predecessor was the king a year before that.

Two Chinese companies are placed behind Samsung, Huawei is second, while OPPO is third.

Another interesting statistic that DSCC shared has to do with foldable displays. Samsung Display was the main display supplier for foldables in Q4 2022, as it took 81% of the market. It did have a 91% share in Q3 2022, though, so this signalizes a drop.

BOE, a Chinese display supplier, managed to increase its share from 4% in Q3 2022 to 17% in Q4 2022. It will be interesting to see what the numbers will look like at the end of next year. More and more foldables are coming, and BOE displays could become even more popular.
