While we are still waiting for the successor to the Mahindra Scorpio Getaway pickup truck, Mahindra has just launched the new version of the vehicle as Mahindra PikUp in Australia. The new Mahindra PikUp has been launched in Australia with a diesel-automatic powertrain, with the legendary cricketer Matthew Hayden roped in as the brand ambassador for the vehicle. A video commercial has been released for the Mahindra PikUp featuring Hayden and his family, which is now live on the social media handles and website of Mahindra Australia.

Based on the underpinnings of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic, the Mahindra Pikup is a double-cab pickup truck. The PikUp shares its design with the Scorpio till the B-pillar, post which it replaces the third row with an open flatbed. The frontal look of the Mahindra PikUp is the same as the version of the Mahindra Scorpio before the currently-available Scorpio Classic came in, with squared inserts in the front grille, projector headlamps with eyebrow-shaped daytime running LEDs, body-coloured front bumper with fog lamps and front skid plate. The Mahindra PikUp also gets alloy wheels and body-coloured outside rear-view mirrors.

Classy cabin

On the inside too, the Mahindra PikUp shares much with the cabin of the previous version of the Mahindra Scorpio, with the entire cabin finished in a theme of black. The highlights of the cabin are a three-spoke steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear AC vents and a rear camera. The PikUp also gets something which the Mahindra Scorpio (not Scorpio-N) hasn’t got for years now – an automatic gearshift lever.

Powering the Mahindra PikUp is the same 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which has remained the mainstay of the Scorpio for years now. The PikUp has been launched with a 6-speed Aisin automatic gearbox, which is the same automatic transmission used in the new generation SUVs from Mahindra, including the Thar, Scorpio-N and XUV700. The PikUp claims a maximum power output of 140 PS and a peak torque output of 270 Nm and is available in Australia with a four-wheel-drive system as standard.

While the Australian market has received the Mahindra Scorpio-based pickup truck, the Indian market is yet to get this lifestyle vehicle. However, the Mahindra PikUp has been spotted doing trial runs many times on Indian roads. If launched, the Mahindra PikUp can be a much more affordable and equally rugged alternative to the much higher-priced lifestyle pickup trucks like the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu V-Cross.
