Galaxy S21 gets February update in the US without One UI 5.1

0 33

Samsung is rolling out a new update to the Galaxy S21 series in the US, including the Galaxy S21 FE. Unfortunately, it isn’t One UI 5.1 just yet. The devices are only getting the February 2023 Android security patch. The new One UI version should arrive in the coming weeks.

The latest update for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in the US is currently available for unlocked units. The new firmware build number for the phones is G99*U1UES5DWB2. The update for the Galaxy S21 FE, on the other hand, is initially rolling out to carrier-locked units with firmware version G990USQS4DWA1 (via SamMobile). Samsung should cover all eligible Galaxy S21 devices stateside with the February SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in the coming days.

The four Galaxy S21 models are only getting the latest security patch with this update. Samsung says this month’s SMR contains patches for seven Galaxy-specific vulnerabilities and more than 40 Android OS vulnerabilities. Google labeled five of those as critical flaws. Some of them allowed remote code execution.

This essentially paves a way for threat actors to remotely take control of your phone by exploiting the vulnerabilities. Installing the latest update would keep your Galaxy S21 phone safe from those flaws.

The Galaxy S21 phones should soon get the One UI 5.1 update in the US

While this update is quite an important one for your phone’s security, it would have been better if Samsung bundled One UI 5.1 with this release. The new One UI version was rolled out to the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Galaxy S21 FE in international markets last week.

These devices picked up the update around the same time as the Galaxy S22 series. While the latter has already received One UI 5.1 in the US, the Korean firm has kept Galaxy S21 users waiting for it. At least for the time being.

One UI 5.1 brings a host of new features and improvements to Galaxy devices, adding to your everyday smartphone experience. It improves the camera, Samsung Notes, Bixby Text Call, multitasking experience, and more.

Hopefully, Samsung won’t keep Galaxy S21 users in the US waiting for the new One UI version for much longer. We will let you know when the update starts rolling out. In the meantime, you can install the latest to elevate the security of your phone. As usual, you can navigate to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install to check for updates manually.
