Galaxy S23 uses new OLED display with improved power efficiency

Samsung didn’t say this during Unpacked, but the Galaxy S23 phones feature a new OLED display with improved power efficiency. According to an official release by Samsung Display, this year’s flagship Galaxy smartphones consume 13 to 16 percent less power to achieve the same level of brightness.

If you quickly glance through the display specs of the Galaxy S23 trio, it would seem that Samsung changed nothing from last year. It is the same Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with up to 120Hz of variable refresh rate. The Korean firm is offering the same display resolution too. We are getting FHD+ screens (1080 x 2340 pixels) on the base Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+, while the Ultra model features a QHD+ screen (1440 × 3088 pixels).

The only noticeable change on the spec sheet is the maximum brightness level for the base model. While last year’s Galaxy S23 maxed out at 1,300 nits of peak brightness, it goes up to 1,750 nits this year. However, the Plus and Ultra models boasted that level of brightness last year too. So nothing changes for those two. Many lamented Samsung for the lack of innovation or improvement here. The company already makes smartphone displays with much higher brightness levels.

However, it seems Samsung once again focused on improving things that matter more. The screens on the Galaxy S22 phones were already incredibly good, while 1,750 nits of peak brightness are more than enough for comfortable viewing even in broad daylight. As such, the Korean firm worked to make the screens more power efficient. Samsung says it applied new organic materials that allow electrons to move faster and more freely, helping reduce power consumption.

The Galaxy S23 phones feature a more power-efficient display

According to Dylan Raga, a display reviewer for XDA Developers, the Galaxy S23 phones are “using a unique set of OLED luminescent materials” that they haven’t seen on any other device yet. During their research, Raga found that the red subpixels are new with a shorter wavelength, while green emission is broader. All of this helps make the screens more power efficient. The Galaxy S23 Ultra consumes about 0.6W less power than the iPhone 14 Pro to reach 1,150 nits of brightness.

This explains the stunningly improved battery life of the Galaxy S23 series as compared to the Galaxy S22. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is already a lot more power-efficient, Samsung has also reduced the power consumption of the display. These small things, coupled with some big ones like the 200MP primary rear camera and improved software, make the Galaxy S23 Ultra an almost perfect smartphone out there.
