Galaxy Watch 5 gets zoom control for phone camera

0 21

Last week, Samsung announced that it will add a pinch-to-zoom functionality to the Camera Controller app on the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 models with a new update. The said update is now rolling out to its latest smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are both getting the new feature.

Samsung‘s smartwatches let you remotely control the camera on your connected Galaxy smartphone. The wrist wearables can show the phone’s camera viewfinder and allow you to capture a shot directly from their tiny screens. The latest update for the Galaxy Watch 5 series now adds a zoom functionality. You can pinch on the screen or rotate the bezel (physical or virtual) to zoom in/out on a scene.

This functionality will be limited to recent flagship Galaxy smartphones, though. Samsung says flagship devices launched in 2020 and later will get it. That narrows down the list to Galaxy S20 and newer models, including the Galaxy Z Flip and newer foldables. Moreover, the devices must be running Samsung’s One UI 5.1 for this feature to work. One UI 5.1 isn’t even official yet. It will debut on the Galaxy S23 series on February 1. Older Galaxy flagships should get it afterward.

While you may have to wait for camera zoom to work on your Galaxy Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro following this update, another new feature will be available immediately. Samsung is adding a new “Connected device diagnostics” option to the Samsung Members app. It will help check the proper performance of your watch’s battery status, touch screen, and more on the connected smartphone. You will have to separately update the Samsung Members and Galaxy Wearable apps to get this feature.

The Galaxy Watch 5 series is also getting the January security patch

Apart from these features, the latest update for the Galaxy Watch 5 duo also brings the January security patch. This month’s security release patches dozens of vulnerabilities on the devices. If you’re using any of Samsung’s new smartwatches, you should get this update soon unless you already have. The new firmware version for the devices is R9**XXU1AWA3.

You can check for updates from the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. The same option is also available from Watch Settings in the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone. You should get a notification once the update becomes available for your watch.
