Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be smallest Samsung phone to support DeX

0 53

The Galaxy Z Flip line of clamshell foldables from Samsung is not exactly as flagship-grade as some of us would like. While you get a lot of high-end features, such as the latest Snapdragon chips and 120Hz AMOLED displays, Galaxy Z Flip smartphones are lacking in some areas.

The cameras, for example, are not as good as the ones you get on Samsung’s other flagships. And on the software side, the Galaxy Z Flips don’t have one of the company’s best features, Samsung DeX. But according to our sources, that will change this year!

You read that right: the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will support Samsung DeX, making it the smallest Galaxy phone ever to do so. For those unaware, DeX is a tool that lets you turn Samsung phones and tablets into a workstation with a desktop-like interface.

That desktop interface can be projected to an external display, like a smart TV or monitor, wirelessly or using an HDMI adaptor (monitors with USB-C connectivity are also supported), and you can connect standard input devices like mice and keyboards.

Samsung also offers a DeX app for Windows and Mac so you can use it on your computer using just a USB-C cable. On tablets, you can DeX on the device itself, but naturally, that’s not possible on smartphones as they don’t have the screen estate.

It’s unknown right now whether older Galaxy Z Flips will also get DeX

What about existing Galaxy Z Flip smartphones? Will they get Samsung DeX support through a software update after the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has gone official? Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on that at this time, but we will do our best to find out. The older models are certainly capable of running DeX without breaking a sweat, so fingers crossed at least some of them will get the feature.

The Galax Z Flip 5, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, will be unveiled at Samsung’s next Unpacked event, which is expected to be held sometime in late July. Both devices will come with Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1 out of the box and will be eligible for four major OS upgrades like every other modern Galaxy flagship. Samsung will also announce the Galaxy Watch 6 series at the same event, alongside the Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, and Tab S9 Ultra.
