Galaxy Z Fold 3 screens cracking for some users, following warranty expiration

0 39

Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable phones are having problems with the inner folding display. The screens are cracking randomly without any impact. Multiple users have reported the issue over the past few months. For some, the device is out of warranty, so a screen replacement would cost big. Others, meanwhile, say Samsung refused to cover the damage under warranty.

The first report of a cracked Galaxy Z Fold 3 folding display surfaced on Reddit back in November 2022. A user from Australia said the screen split along the fold line just after three months of usage. The Redditor name Mizderrung claims that they had never dropped the foldable during their ownership. Samsung’s repair technicians initially accepted to get the screen related under warranty, but later said that they detected an impact point and asked for $700 for repair.

Another Redditor Snoo_23916 also reported a similar scenario last month. They had used the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for about 15 months and the screen gave up just when they were showing off the phone to a friend. The device was never dropped and very rarely unfolded, just 3-4 times a week. With the phone out of warranty, a repair would now cost them several hundred dollars. “Just saw the price to repair and that is shocking,” the dejected user posted on Reddit.

Multiple Galaxy Z Fold 3 users have reported cracked screens

These aren’t the cases of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 screens cracking randomly, though. PhoneArena recently received an email from a user who has a similar story too. Her foldable also suffered a cracked display right down the middle just after the warranty expired. And you might have guessed, it happened randomly without any drop or strong impact. Samsung referred her to its repair partner uBreakiFix, who said a screen replacement would cost a whopping $800.

After PhoneArena reported this Galaxy Z Fold 3 issue, a reader from Singapore commented that their foldable also got some “weird lines” on the screen just after the warranty expired. The folding display is now totally unresponsive. “My phone never dropped and [have] no physical damage,” they say. Samsung repair center is reportedly asking for $700 for a fix. “If anybody wants to initiate legal action [against Samsung],  please happy (sic) to include me,” the user added.

There may be more people suffering from a damaged Galaxy Z Fold 3 screen. As of this writing, Samsung hasn’t officially commented on the matter. It’s unclear if these users did something wrong or if they are just unlucky. But if you’re having problems with your Galaxy Z Fold 3, or any other Galaxy smartphone for that matter, and the local service center isn’t doing enough to address our issue, you can directly reach out to the Samsung CEO here.
