Global fast-food chicken chain Pollo Campero eyes Denver, Colorado Springs for expansion

Pollo Campero, the world’s largest Central American chicken franchise, is eyeing Denver and Colorado Springs to expand into the Colorado market for the first time.

The fast-casual chain aims to build four to six locations in next five years in the Centennial State, with the potential for 16. Each site would create 40 jobs.

“There’s a lot of excitement,” said Blas Escarcega, director of franchise development. “The brand has never been stronger than it is now.”

The company is trying to find the right franchise partners in the state to turn these plans into a reality. Escarcega said they’d start in the Mile High City, then take on the Colorado Springs market.

Over 22% of Colorado’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates from last July. However, by the end of this decade, one in four Coloradans will be Latino, the Latino Leadership Institute reported.

Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and El Paso Counties all have Latino populations over 100,000.

Pollo Campero, which has more than 80 locations nationally and another 270 worldwide, opened its first U.S. site in 2002.

Escarcega noted the success of its Los Angeles and Las Vegas restaurants. While it seems a stretch that Coloradans would drive that far just for chicken, Escarcega insists that he has heard of Pollo Campero-lovers getting in the car to do just that.

As a result, it made sense to bring “the best chicken” to Colorado, Utah and Arizona next, he added.

“People want to experience the flavors of the world,” Escarcega said in a telephone interview.
