Google Docs will now allow users to smoothly add codes. The upcoming feature lets you input code in a range of programming languages. Currently, the feature supports C/C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python. Organizations that have their Google accounts signed up for Rapid Release, the company’s fast-track program for new features, will receive the update between 14 December and 29 December. Now you can easily add codes to your documents.
Coding in Google Docs: How to use the new feature
- Head to the document’s insert menu
- Choose building blocks and code blocks
- Select a programming language (C/C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Unset)
The new feature is now available to Google Workspace Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, Education Standard/Plus, and Nonprofit account holders. However, it is not available to users with personal Google Accounts. Recently, Google rolled out a new Material You toggle design for its Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
The goal is to make code more readable in Google Docs and improve collaboration. Besides the menu, you can easily add by using @-search > Code blocks > choose your programming language, while those with Markdown enabled can type “` and press Enter.
Once rolled out, users can access the feature by selecting Insert then Building Blocks then Code Block. With an integrated solution for the problem, businesses will no longer have to rely on third-party solutions, and can benefit from future updates to the feature down the line such as the addition of more programming languages.
In a blog post on the new feature, Google noted that it will only be available for those with “Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, Education Plus customers, and Nonprofit” accounts.

Also, if someone copies your code from the document, the formatting may not stick. However, with a Code Block, the formatting should transfer in the copy/paste. Code Blocks can be edited without messing up the formatting or highlighting.
