Google Lets You Connect Your Fitbit With Assistant, Nest Hub Will Show Data

0 72

Earlier this month, Google published support articles that hinted at a deeper Google Fit and Fitbit integration on Nest Hub. It provided detailed instructions on how to connect and see your activity metrics from these devices on your Nest display. However, the Google Assistant settings to enable the feature was not live back then. It is now appearing for some users, 9to5Google has confirmed.

According to the new report, navigating to Assistant settings > Wellness > Activity on phones that have received the new feature lets you connect your Google Fit and Fitbit accounts, alongside the existing option to add your Calm account. If you tap on the connect button for either new option, Google will explain how Assistant will use your activity data. It will then take you to a new screen where you can select what activity data you want to share with the Assistant.

If you’re connecting a Fitbit account, Google has two categories of data: “heart rate” and “activity and exercise”. You can enable either or both. For Google Fit, there are three categories — Activity metrics (workouts, steps, duration, pace, calories burned, and other activity data), Distance, and Heart rate.

As the new report notes, you can connect both Fitbit and Google Fit with Assistant simultaneously. However, you can keep only one of them active at a time in Assistant settings. Your Nest Hub will show activity data from the connected account. That said, this functionality is reportedly not yet live on the Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Nest Hub even after connecting the Fitbit and Google Fit accounts. But it should now only be a matter of time.

Nest Hub is getting deeper integration with Google Fit and Fitbit with Assistant

Google Assistant can do a lot of things but its health integrations are somewhat limited. You can ask the digital assistant about your sleep data and that’s pretty much it. Google is finally giving it more powers so you can quickly view your health and activity information on your Nest display. The first signs of this deeper integration came earlier this month when the company published the support pages with setup instructions. The feature is now starting to roll out to users too.

Following this integration, Google Assistant will be able to answer your activity-related questions across your devices. The set-up prompts also suggest that the “Assistant will show this data, suggestions, and related content without you having to ask”. You may have to explicitly opt-in for these proactive fitness results on your Nest Hub though. Your Assistant-enabled smart display will likely show cards similar to that for your sleep data. We should get more details on this soon. A wider rollout shouldn’t be too far off now.
