Google working on an Apple Watch like loud sound alerts for Pixel phones

Google’s Pixel phones can very well identify songs playing around you with “Now Playing.” Then the phones also come equipped to detect coughing and snoring during sleep. Now, Google plans to introduce loud sound alerts to the At a Glance feature.

9to5Google dug into the latest version of Android System Intelligence, version T.23, for Pixel 7, which reveals a new “Loud sound alert.” The feature will warn users “when [a] hearing-damaging loud sound [is] detected.”

The loud sound alerts on Google’s Pixel phones are expected to be displayed on the lock screen and at “At a Glance” on the home screen.

Apple Watch has had a feature like this for several years now. The purpose of this alert is to prompt users to either move away from the source of the noise or reduce the volume.

Google’s new health capability for detecting loud sounds builds upon the phone’s existing audio features. For example, Pixel phones have a Now Playing feature that runs in the background and uses an on-device database to identify songs playing nearby. The Google Clock app also allows users to enable a feature that listens for coughs and snores while they sleep. Furthermore, the Recorder app can automatically label and categorise speech, music, and other sounds.

Google has also implemented changes in the Pixel Launcher search shortcuts by adding new options, with the update. There are new shortcuts such as Google, YouTube, Maps, Play Store, Settings, and Contacts. Additionally, users can now easily search for Chrome, files, and photos through the launcher. Furthermore, Google has also made some changes to the Settings list by reorganising it and have introduced new icons.

The report notes that the loud sound alert is not live even after updating to the Android System Intelligence version T.23. We can expect the feature to roll out to users in the coming months.
