Gorilla Glass Victus 2 launches with one aim; See the benefits with this new glass

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 has been announced by Corning, promising improved drop resistance and scratch protection.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 has been announced as the next iteration of the stronger protection glass used by smartphones. The industry had already given us a glimpse of the Gorilla Glass Victus over the last year, showing improved durability and scratch protection on flagship grade Android devices. Innovation never stops though and corning has now announced an improved version that promises to offer even better drop protection and scratch resistance.

Corning claims that the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 delivers improved drop performance on rough surfaces such as concrete, all while preserving the scratch resistance that was presented with Gorilla Glass Victus. Hence, if you drop your phone on a concrete surface, the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 layer should keep it all shatter free.

“We challenged our scientists not only to create a glass composition that was durable enough to better survive drops from waist height onto rougher surfaces than asphalt, but to improve cover-glass performance for larger and heavier devices,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager, Gorilla Glass.

“With more sophisticated and varied designs, today’s smartphones are nearly 15% heavier, and screen sizes are up to 10% larger, than they were four years ago – increasing both the stress on the cover glass and the probability of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines tough for consumers and OEMs,” he adds.

Corning has data to back up its claims. In the lab tests, the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 was able to survive a drop of up to 1 meter on a surface that replicated concrete. Other competing aluminosilicate glass failed from a half a meter or less.

Victus 2 was able to survive drops from up to 2 meters on a surface that replicated asphalt. It was also four times better at maintaining scratch resistance when compared to competing aluminosilicate glass.

Corning says that various manufacturers are evaluating the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and the company expects the new version to reach the market in a few months. Could this mean that we can see the new version of the Gorilla Glass on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which is expected to be announced in February 2023?
