Harrison Ford couldn’t sit with wife at Cannes: Awkward moment for star

Harrison Ford and his wife Calista Flockhart received a thunderous applause from fans, as they walked hand-in-hand on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet to attend the big, splashy premiere of film, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the actor’s final appearance in the celebrated franchise.

But Ford, the evening’s honored guest, faced an awkward moment when he and Flockhart arrived at their seats in the theater and learned they weren’t sitting together, TMZ reported. As the crowd stood and clapped for the arrival of “Indiana Jones and Calista Flockhart,” video shows the couple scanning the seats, looking confused.

Flockhart then notices she’s been placed behind in the row behind him. She mentions her seating assignment to Ford him with a smile, which prompts him to utter what appears to be an “Oh.” The “Ally McBeal” star eventually leaves his side and tries to make her way around other attendees to get to her seat in the other row.

Somehow, the festival organizers thought this would be an appropriate arrangement. But the awkwardness of Flockhart’s placement became apparent some moments later, as her movie star husband received more adulation for his legendary career.

Before playing the movie, Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux had the actor stand up before the crowd; Flockhart could be seen in a video clip standing somewhat back, one among the crowd, clapping and cheering him on.

At least when Frémaux summoned Ford to the stage to receive a surprise Palme d’Or, the actor made sure to give Flockhart a special mention.

Ford, 80, began by talking about the reel that had just been played, which showed him in some of his greatest roles — from “Star Wars” and the “Indiana Jones” movies to “The Fugitive. He joked about seeing his “life flash before his eyes.” But he said it was not “all of his life.” Gesturing towards Flockhart, 58, he said his life has been “enabled by my lovely wife.” He paused for the crowd to applaud Flockhart, then continued to say she has supported his “passions and dreams, and I’m grateful.”

As many noted, Ford became teary-eyed during the speech and appeared to be genuinely moved, letting go of any earlier confusion about the seating arrangements. Ford told the audience: “I love you, too. But I’ve got a movie you ought to see. It’s right behind me. So let me get out of the way, and thank you again for this great honor.”

Alas, the crowd’s enthusiasm for being at the “Indiana Jones” premiere waned as they actually watched the movie, which again shows Ford again playing the eponymous archeologist, Variety reported. This time, the action has been moved up to 1969, and Jones must again fight off evil Nazis, but against the backdrop of the space race.

“The film’s elaborate action scenes and witty one-liners delivered by (co-star) Phoebe Waller-Bridge received a less-than-rapturous response inside the theater,” Variety said. “During parts of the 142-minute film, audience members could be heard whispering out of boredom in French.”

As the credits rolled, Ford and the movie received a standing ovation, which lasted five minutes. But according to Variety, the applause was “muted,” and a five-minute standing ovation, “by Cannes standards,” is “more of a polite formality.”

Still, it seems that Ford had a good time — awkward seating moment notwithstanding. Most of all, it appears that he had fun getting dressed up to go out on a date night with his wife. Their stylist shared behind-the-scenes photos of the two in a French hotel room, getting ready to hit the red carpet. In one photo, Ford is seen gapingly lovingly at his wife, posing in a black Zuhair Murad tulle gown with velvet trim.
