Hear Sheryl Crow Team Up With Peter Gabriel on ‘Digging in the Dirt’

Sheryl Crow‘s new LP Evolution arrives March 29, and she’s just shared a cover of Peter Gabriel‘s 1992 classic “Digging in the Dirt,” which will appear on the deluxe edition. She’s joined on the recording by Gabriel himself.

“Peter’s song is the one that started me on this whole process of making my new album,” Crow says in a statement. “It was the first song I brought to [album producer] Mike Elizondo. The idea of self-examination to understand our wounds and flaws and how they affect our daily lives really resonated with me, because that process can lead to self-healing. But it can be messy, and it feels like digging in the dirt. Peter’s lyrics express that so beautifully, with this ridiculous groove driving underneath.”

She continues, “When he agreed to sing on my cover of ‘Digging in the Dirt,’ it just blew me away, and ironically, it ended up being the last song we finished for the album. It’s such an honor to have him perform on this song which really means so much to me, and there is nobody in the world who sings like Peter Gabriel.”

Evolution is Sheryl Crow’s first album since 2019’s Threads, which she claimed at the time would be her last one. “Albums as an art form are a little bit of a dying art form,” she told Rolling Stone, “people are more interested in singles.” But on the same day that she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, she announced that she had changed her mind.

“Everything is more song oriented now with streaming, and making an album is a huge endeavor,” Crow said in a statement. “I started sending just a couple of demos to Mike, but the songs just kept flowing out of me and it was pretty obvious this was going to be an album…I said I’d never make another record, thought there was no point to it. But this music comes from my soul. And I hope whoever hears this record can feel that.”

Gabriel, meanwhile, released his long-awaited album I/O last year. He played nearly the entire record on an arena tour of Europe and America that wrapped up before the album came out. He has no additional shows on the books, but Crow will be playing all over the world over the next few months.
