Hitachi Astemo to supply Jatco parts for Nissan e-axles

Hitachi Astemo said it would provide inverters and motors to transmission maker Jatco which would in turn supply e-axles for future Nissan Motor e-Power and battery electric vehicles.

Jatco would be a Tier 1 systems integrator for the automaker’s e-axles, using Hitachi Astemo’s “highly efficient, low loss” motors which use a square wire, as well as “highly efficient inverters”.

The supplier said demand was expected to rise for lightweight, compact and efficient, e-axles which are more efficient to manufacture at lower cost through a reduced number of parts.

Hitachi Astemo consequently plans to expand sales of its in house developed electric axles to automakers worldwide.

It will also supply motors and inverters for electric axles assembled by automobile and gearbox manufacturers.

The company said it would ‘leverage synergies’ from the 2021 merger of Hitachi Automotive Systems with Keihin, Showa and Nissin Kogyo to form Hitachi Astemo, taking advantage of the integrated technology and resources while further enhancing its production bases worldwide.

It is aiming to invest JPY300bn including R&D in electrification until fiscal 2025, increase sales revenue to “over” JPY400bn in fiscal 2025 and “more than” double sales revenue by fiscal 2030.

The supplier, in cooperation with Hitachi’s R&D Group, makes an inverter with claimed industry leading power density, thanks to its claimed unique cooling power module and small, thin, highly heat dissipating insulation mounting technology.

Motors were Hitachi’s founding product, and Hitachi Astemo said it had established a competitive advantage in torque density through the technology it has developed over years which includes material development, analysis, sound reducing and manufacturing techniques to develop the magnetic circuits comprised of magnets, electromagnetic steel sheets, and windings.

“Hitachi Astemo also shows its strengths as a systems integrator, which includes optimisation control software for motors and gears,” the supplier said in a statement.

“Jatco leverages its accumulated expertise from the development and mass production of transmissions to produce compact and quiet gearboxes. This combined with Hitachi Astemo’s motors and inverters is a total e-axle package for Nissan, boasting industry- leading efficiency, low vibration, low noise and modular design.”
