India’s first owner of the electric SUV explains why he bought it [Video]

The Mahindra XUV400, a sub-compact all-electric SUV and a direct rival to the Tata Nexon EV, was launched in January 2023. Deliveries of the XUV400 have already commenced across the country, and we now have access to the first ownership experience of this all-electric SUV from New Delhi.

According to the XUV400 owner featured in the video, he owns a Mahindra Scorpio-N petrol and purchased the XUV400 for his general in-city commutes. The owner chose the top-spec EL variant in black with a contrast bronze roof and bronze highlights, as he wanted a feature-rich variant. He decided against purchasing the Nexon EV Max due to its commonality among electric vehicle buyers and the crossover-like design, and didn’t opt for the petrol-powered version of the XUV300 as he already owned a petrol-powered Scorpio-N.

While the XUV400’s buying cost is almost Rs 3 lakh higher than that of the XUV300, the owner attests that the running and maintenance costs of the XUV400 are extremely low compared to the petrol XUV300. The XUV400 is equipped with a 39.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that claims a maximum driving range of 456 km, but the owner states that his XUV400 returns a maximum range of 300-320 km in real-world driving conditions.

The owner also shows the standard 3.3 kW AC charger provided with the vehicle, which takes around 11-12 hours for a full charge of the XUV400’s battery. He has also installed a 7.2 kW AC charger at his home, which takes around 6 hours for a full charge. Additionally, he carries an AC portable extension cord with an earthing rod, enabling him to charge the vehicle at any given point in time.

Despite being based on the XUV300 compact SUV, the Mahindra XUV400 stands out with various distinctive features. Apart from being longer and having a larger wheelbase than the XUV300, the XUV400 also boasts of copper highlights that contrast with its closed grille, giving it a unique front identity. The SUV is also equipped with new LED inserts for the taillights, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and a distinct rear fender design beyond the rear door panels.

The interior of the Mahindra XUV400 retains the same cabin layout as the XUV300, but with a new all-black theme. It also features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a single-pane sunroof, connected car technology, push start-stop button, and six airbags.

In contrast to the Born Electric platforms displayed by Mahindra in August, the XUV400 is built on the existing platform of the XUV300.
