Mahindra is all set to enter the three-wheeler market with an aim to increase EV penetration in the last-mile transportation system.

Three-wheeled auto rickshaws have been a popular mode of transport across India over the years.

These vehicles serve as a cheaper alternative to cabs, taxis and public buses in the urban landscape. Known for their compact size and faster acceleration, auto rickshaws can easily navigate through crowded streets, saving the time of many commuters.

The drivers of these three-wheelers operate informally and flexibly which gives them the option of adjusting to shifting demand. For many people in India, these cars are not just a means of transportation, but also a representation of economic empowerment.

Indian auto giant Mahindra is now set to enter the three-wheeler market with an aim to electrify the sector. Like most of the countries in the world, India has also shifted its focus to reducing carbon footprints in an effort to battle air pollution. Several existing four-wheeler models already have their EV variants, while the electric bike market has also witnessed a significant rise in recent times.

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited (MLMML), a division of Mahindra, has recently announced a new partnership with IRP Systems, which is known for producing top-quality electric powertrains. Thanks to the collaboration, IRP Systems will now assist Mahindra in launching electric three-wheelers, increasing EV penetration in the last-mile transportation system.

According to a report by Electrek, the agreement adheres to the powertrain hardware’s successful, stringent testing and validation procedure to satisfy the strict standards of Mahindra in the demanding Indian market and other countries as well.

Speaking about the partnership with IRP Systems, Sanjiv Gupta, the Chief of Operations in MLMML, said, “We aim to electrify last-mile transportation, with cutting-edge technology as well as reliable vehicles. The collaboration with IRP Systems, which shares the same vision, marks a significant step in that direction.”

CEO of IRP Systems Moran Price has also spoken highly of the collaboration. “We are proud to collaborate with India’s leading OEM. The synergy between both companies is a game changer in India’s last-mile market, creating a winning offering in one of the most significant segments. It is another major step towards our goal of making EVs accessible to everyone everywhere,” he explained.

The traditional auto rickshaws run on small motorcycle combustion engines. But in recent times, some major companies like IKEA have started using electric three-wheelers for delivery purposes.
