Influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli is back in the news this week, and, as usual, it’s because of her association to other people who are more famous — or infamous — that she is.

First off, Us Weekly reported that the 24-year-old model and YouTube star has once again broken up with Jacob Elordi, the 6-foot-5-inch Australian actor who became one of 2023’s breakout stars with his performances in “Priscilla” and “Saltburn.” He’s also set to host “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.

Giannulli and Elordi were first romantically linked in 2021 and broke up in August 2022, but they got back together the following month. Since then, it always appeared that the couple tried to keep their on-off relationship under wraps — or that Elordi wanted to keep his association with her under wraps. The rising star never brought Giannulli as his official date to any red carpet events, and he shut down any questions about his romantic life when he was interviewed for splashy GQ cover story in November, when he was described as “the latest heir to the Hot Young Actor crown.”

It’s entirely possible that Elordi tried to avoid any focus on his relationship with Giannulli because her scandalous past can be pretty overwhelming. Giannulli is best known to America as one of the “faces” of the college admissions scandal, in which her parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli, played an outsized role.

Indeed, Giannulli’s other news-making moment this week occurred when she may have inadvertently dropped a reference to her parents’ crimes and their stints in federal prison while filming one of her otherwise anodyne YouTube videos.

In the vlog, Giannulli, as usual, brought her fans into her high-end Los Angeles home to give them a glimpse of her privileged, “nepo baby” life. This time, she filmed herself in her well-appointed kitchen as she discussed some decorating plans, Page Six reported. 

“Back in the kitchen,” Giannulli said. “Sorry for the mess that’s behind me — the kitchen needs a clean. I’m so excited, you guys, I finally ordered wallpaper for the kitchen so it’s not going to feel so sterile.”

“It’s not going to feel like … a prison,” the 24-year-old continued before pausing for a second and staring at the camera, realizing the irony of her comment, as Page Six reported.

“Save the jokes. I don’t want to hear it. I set you up and I don’t want you to tee off. OK?”

In 2019, Giannulli’s TV star mother and fashion designer father were arrested and charged for their role in the college admissions scandal, in which they and dozens of other wealthy parents were accused of paying bribes to get their children fraudulently admitted to top U.S. colleges.

The outwardly wholesome TV star and her husband eventually pleaded guilty to paying $500,000 in bribes to get Giannulli and her sister Isabella admitted to the University of Southern California on the false pretense of being talented crew team athletes. Both Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli were sentenced to serve time in federal prison; Loughlin for two months and her husband for five months.

At the time, the scandal prompted Giannulli, who has been active on YouTube since 2014, to go radio silent as her parents’ case was litigated in federal court. She finally stepped back into the public eye by appearing on Facebook Watch’s “Red Table Talk” in late 2020, while her mother was in prison.

Giannulli told host Jada Pinkett Smith about her shame and embarrassment for her family’s role in the scandal. The influencer was herself embroiled in the scandal when prosecutors alleged that she and her sister were complicit in efforts by bribery scheme mastermind William “Rick” Singer to portray them as crew team recruits in their USC applications.
