James Cameron Confirms Avatar 4 And 5

Avatar: The Way Of Water debuted in theatres on December 16 and it became the highest-grossing film of 2022 last week. The sequel surpassed the former highest-grossing film, the blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick, following the latest box office totals, as reported by Deadline.

Avatar 2 has already made more than $1.5 billion globally. However, Avatar’s director recently gives green light to Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. In a recent episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on HBO Max, the director appeared to confirm there will be Avatar sequels after saying that the latest film will make the profit needed to continue the franchise.

The director quipped saying that he ‘can’t wiggle out’ of creating the final two Avatar movies as his latest flick The Way Of The Water looked set to pass break even and became the highest-grossing film of 2022. James said, “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels.”

The director added, “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.” Previously, the filmmaker has made no secret of the astronomical costs of making the movie, describing it as ‘very f* expensive.’ The director even said before the release of the third instalment that he would end the whole franchise early if audiences do not seem to ‘give a s***’.

Elsewhere, on the HBO Max show, he referred to the misunderstanding about his comments about the profits needed from The Way Of Water. The director revealed that he said the film needed to be among the highest-grossing films in history to break even, the Metro reported. However, Cameron further added that many had taken his comments differently, thinking that The Way Of Water needed to reach $2 billion and be in the top 10 to break even.

James explained: ‘[I] never actually gave it a number. I said it would have to be among the highest-grossing films in history and somebody else applied for that number and it got picked up. The number is actually less.’ He then added that he expects to have a discussion with Disney soon about what is going to happen with Avatar 3.
