It’s time to wrap up warm, because hell has just frozen over after James Gunn announced he’d be stepping back from debunking DCU rumors on social media, which has been one of his favorite pastimes ever since he was first appointed as studio co-CEO alongside Peter Safran last year.

Between then and now, the filmmaker-turned-executive has been a constant presence on Twitter when it comes to pouring cold water over all sorts of hearsay, whispers, speculation, and scuttlebutt, but it would appear that everyone has their breaking point. It must be exhausting being bombarded on a daily basis, but those who accuse the Guardians of the Galaxy director of being perhaps a little too “Always Online” aren’t exactly going to be sympathetic to his plight.

“Don’t believe anything until it comes directly from the source” is stating the obvious in fairness, but that’s also not how the internet works. Of course, Gunn could have avoided the entire situation had he simply remained silent and opted not to engage with the reams of rumor-mongering that flood his timeline on a daily basis, but that’s never really been his bag. Until now, that is.

Not that it’s going to do anything to dissuade folks from firing a Hail Mary or two in his direction in the off-chance they actually manage to get a response, although you do wonder if Kevin Feige is having a chuckle to himself given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s head honcho oversees the most rumor-friendly franchise there’s ever been while being a staunchly offline presence.
