James Gunn Shoots Down Talk DC’s Harley Quinn Rivalry Will Heat Up

When the multiverse was first confirmed to be the superhero genre’s next major storytelling tactic, everyone instantly focused on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allowing DC to slip in the back door and establish several versions of the same character existing at the same time.

In the space of a year and a half we’re getting Robert Pattinson, Ben Affleck, and Michael Keaton all playing Batman, but James Gunn has moved quickly to shoot down a rumor that the franchise’s Harley Quinn rivalry is about to heat up even more. At the moment, we’ve got Lady Gaga having just wrapped shooting on Joker: Folie à Deux, with Kaley Cuoco’s animated series renewed for a fourth season last year.

That ironically leaves the DCU’s canonical Quinn out in the cold, even though the co-CEO has gone on record stating his desires to work with Margot Robbie again. However, it won’t be happening in a prequel series set before the events of Suicide Squad, that’s for sure, not that we even really needed Gunn to debunk it for us anyway.

There’s always the chance that Robbie will get her fourth bite at the cherry, especially with Gunn at the creative helm, but a streaming series taking place when she’s regular old Harleen Quinzell sounds speculative at best given the popularity of the character and Robbie’s preferred method of playing her.

The Joker’s beau is a solid bet to return at one stage or another in the future even with the incoming soft reboot, just not like this.
