James Gunn Shuts Down Talk of the DCU Being Conquered by the Incoming AI Revolution
For all its merits outside of the creative world, the specific brand of hostility that artificial intelligence can elicit is nothing short of fascinating. On one hand, artists should in no way feel threatened by the bots and their non-existent grasp on the human experience, but on the other, art has never had to be good in order to rake in the dough. For that reason and many more, AI shouldn’t be given even an inch in this space.
Indeed, it’s fairly easy to separate the true creatives from the hacks by hearing what they have to say about AI, and unsurprisingly, it looks like James Gunn falls quite safely into the former category.
For those of you who were worried that AI might play a role in Gunn’s DCU, you’re in luck; when pinged on Twitter regarding the possibility of animated voice roles (such as those in Creature Commandos) coming courtesy of an AI-powered sound bank, the gaffer promptly incinerated the notion with a simple “no way.”
Again, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Gunn has no interest in roping AI into his creative process; after going six-for-six on major comic book projects the old-fashioned way, to say nothing about his very loud stance on the importance of storytelling and the misguided notion of “superhero fatigue,” we wouldn’t expect anything less from him, and we’ll happily take yet another omen that the DC Universe is in the safest possible hands.
The first chapter of the new DC Universe, Gods and Monsters, will kick off with the animated miniseries Creature Commandos, which will release to Max sometime in 2024.
