January 2023 security update is live for Samsung’s Galaxy A73

0 31

Samsung has released the January 2023 Android security patch for one more Galaxy smartphone. The Galaxy A73 is picking up the latest security update. It follows the Galaxy Note 10 series and the Galaxy S21 series in the party. You can expect more Galaxy devices to join in the coming days.

The January SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy A73 is currently rolling out in Malaysia, SamMobile reports. Users in the country are getting the new update with firmware version A736BXXS2BVL3. Samsung should gradually expand this rollout to other markets including Europe and Latin America. The company doesn’t sell this phone in the US.

This is the first update for the Galaxy A73 after it picked up Android 13 in November last year. Unsurprisingly, there are no user-facing changes, new features, or improvements here. The last update contained plenty of those. The latest release is all about vulnerability fixes. We are expecting the new SMR to patch dozens of vulnerabilities on Galaxy devices. However, Samsung hasn’t published the contents of this release yet. We will let you know when it does.

The Galaxy A73 is only eligible for quarterly security updates

Samsung launched the Galaxy A73 in March last year as its priciest Galaxy A model. It is the company’s first mid-range phone to feature a 108MP camera. The handset also packs several other flagship-grade specs. But, despite sitting close to the flagship lineup, this device doesn’t get as much attention from the Korean behemoth. It doesn’t get updates every month. The Galaxy A73 is only eligible for quarterly security patches. The next update may not arrive until April this year. It will get four major Android OS updates, though. Android 13 was the first release. The device will also receive Android 14, Android 15, and Android 16.

If rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy A73 will be the last model in this lineup. Samsung doesn’t plan to launch a successor this year. This is because these phones almost overlapped the Fan Edition (FE) lineup in terms of specs and even pricing. The Galaxy A74 is being scrapped in favor of the Galaxy S22 FE, which was previously said to be getting the axe. If this turns out to be true, the Galaxy A54 will be Samsung’s priciest mid-range model this year. Meanwhile, if you’re using the Galaxy A73, watch out for the January security update in the coming days. You can check for updates from the Settings app.
