Jeep Renegade compact SUV for India plans canceled?

For the longest time, the American SUV manufacturer Jeep owned by Stellantis N.V. Corporation has been testing the internationally acclaimed model – the Renegade in the country. The last reported sighting of this vehicle on Indian roads could be dated back to 2020. And at the time of spotting, it was reported that the company was looking to launch the model in the country. However recently it was reported that Jeep could be scraping the plans to launch the subcompact SUV Renegade in India.

Speaking to a media outlet recently, Roland Bouchara, chief executive officer and managing director, of Stellantis India stated, “If you see our product introductions, we are moving towards upper premium luxury (SUV) segments. So we are not going to go down or play in the volumes segment and will always try to position ourselves in the premium luxury segment and that is where we are headed.”

Although this is not as clear as saying the plans for the Renegade launch are scrapped by the brand we can assume that this is pretty much the case. We can speculate this outcome as the Renegade was supposed to be a subcompact SUV positioned under the Compass compact SUV, however with this announcement we can now believe that the model won’t be making its appearance in the Indian subcontinent anytime soon.

The Jeep Renegade was expected to be launched in the Indian market following the pandemic. The all-new car would have taken on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in the Indian market. Under heavy camouflage, the Renegade was spotted on the roads. However, the test mule spotted on the roads was a pre-facelift model. Jeep officially launched the facelifted version of the Renegade in 2018 in the American market. In its current version, the Renegade gets LED headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, foglamps integrated into the bumper, and a skid plate at the front. The Renegade also offers a touchscreen infotainment system with a climate control system that is inspired by the Grand Cherokee.

During the media interview, the Stellantis chief was also asked if the company is working on electric variants of its existing models to which Bouchara replied. “We have a strategy to electrify our range over the next few years and Jeep will be a part of it and whenever we have an update we will share.”

In other Jeep India news, recently Jeep India announced that it has hiked the price of the new facelifted Compass once again for the fourth time this year. According to the newly revised price list, the prices have gone up by Rs 1.8 lakh, depending on the trim selected for the new Compass. With this new price revision, the base model of the Compass which is the Sport 4×2 Petrol model will now cost Rs 20.89 lakh ex-showroom.

Jeep has raised the prices of every Compass model, with the 1.4L Petrol DCT Fifth Anniversary Edition receiving the biggest price hike of Rs 1.80 lakh. On the other hand, the price of the 2.0L Diesel MT model has been reduced by Rs 40,000. The Longitude (O) Petrol DCT and Diesel MT and Night Eagle (O) Petrol DCT and Diesel MT variants have seen price increases of Rs 25,000, while the Sport and Trailhawk models have seen price increases of Rs 20,000. Additionally, the cost of the Model S (O) trim has increased by Rs 45,000. Limited (O) variants are now Rs 40,000 more costly, notwithstanding the Fifth Anniversary Edition Diesel 44 AT’s price rise of Rs 40,000.
