Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Valerie June Star in Healthcare Reform PSA

Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and Valerie June combined forces to call for a more transparent and equitable healthcare system in a new PSA set to air this Sunday during Super Bowl LVIII.

Organized by the nonprofit group Power to the Patients, the spot specifically highlights the way hospitals and insurance companies are able to get away with not clearly stating how much certain services and procedures cost and then billing patients afterward. This has contributed to astronomical levels of medical debt around the United States. 

“Hospitals and insurers are robbing all of us,” Wilson states bluntly at the start of the PSA, while later, Jelly Roll says, “Their greed is destroying the American Dream.” Alongside June, they call on Congress to “put a stop to the overcharging” and “hold hospitals and insurance companies accountable.” 

In a statement, Jelly Roll added: “Hospitals and Insurance companies all around the United States are stealing our future by looting every patient, worker, employer, and family across the country.”

Since its founding in 2021, Power to the Patients has frequently partnered with musicians to promote its campaigns. Just last month, Jelly Roll, Wyclef Jean, and Fat Joe participated in an event in Washington, D.C., while a 2023 spot featured Rick Ross, Chuck D, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Fat Joe, and French Montana. 

While he was in D.C. last month, Jelly Roll also appeared on Capitol Hill, where he lobbied lawmakers to pass legislation to stop the spread of fentanyl. Speaking with Rolling Stone ahead of the Grammys this past weekend, he called his testimony the “single most impactful moment” of his life,” adding: “Nobody humanizes addiction, and that’s an important topic… Fentanyl is deeper than drug addiction. My only goal in that was to hopefully bring attention to it. And I think I did. Believe it or not, I’ve got a call from about every senator in America.”
