Extraction 2 has gotten bigger, darker, and substantially more brutal. The sequel to 2020’s action-powered venture from the Russo Brothers’ AGBO Films was a major film event amidst the pandemic-hit world. Brought to people via Netflix, the Chris Hemsworth-led film made news for its large-scale action choreography and the fact that it was a post-Avengers Russo venture.

Marking their long-term stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave’s directorial debut, Extraction was one hell of a ride through the streets of Dhaka, with Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake unleashing chaos on his enemies while executing his mission, which takes him on a personal journey as well.

Now, fans expect nothing less from Extraction 2, which sees Rake miraculously surviving his previous mission. Now on a new one, he is anticipated to bring back the same chaos, only this time, with much more visual ferocity. And that’s what Joe Russo promises.

Talking to Collider, Joe Russo revealed that Extraction 2 would feature a signature one-take action sequence that will stretch up to 14 minutes. While skeptical about the precision of the time stamp, Russo said, “I haven’t got out the stopwatch, but that seems pretty accurate.”

The sequence’s exact details are under wraps. Still, one can expect a large body count when Rake traverses punches, fist fights, neck-snappings, grenades, firearms, and even a possible helicopter ride during that take. In short, it’s going to be insanely lethal. The movie’s first trailer could contain some glimpse into that sequence, but we’ll only know when we see it.

Sam Hargrave has a knack for such oners. One of Extraction‘s most profoundly spectacular aspects was its 12-minute one-shot action sequence, which saw Rake and Randeep Hooda’s Saju Rav falling off rooftops, engaging with mercs, and camera floating through loads of vehicles in one astonishing piece of direction and production. Even in shorter sequences, there was an emphasis on long takes to sustain a continuous intensity, allowing the audience little-to-no room for relaxation, thus, constantly keeping them at the edge of their seats. It accounts for more eye-catching sequences and for the final product to look visually aesthetic, even in the blood bath and goriness.

This time, in Extraction 2, the sequence gets more extensive and complex as it may involve Hemsworth and the team behind the film pulling it all off in heavy snow, possibly on transport that’s way more complex to shoot on than just cars. And there can be no mistake, for the heavily-rehearsed sequence must be captured in one go. So, things can’t go wrong once Hargrave yells, “action!”

Taking from Joe Russo’s tease, Extraction 2 will outdo its predecessor not just by the timestamp of the one-take sequence but also in terms of the scale of dangerous stunts and killer action choreography.

Extraction 2 is set for a June 16 release date on Netflix. The film will also see Golshifteh Farahani reprise her role from the first movie alongside new faces such as Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt, and Tinatin Dalakishvili.
