Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said the state would generate 30,000 new high-quality jobs in the state by 2028 in the AVGC-XR (animation, visual effects, gaming & comics) sector.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Bengaluru Games, Animation and Visual FX Conference (GAFX) 2024, the chief minister said his government would ensure that 80% of the sector’s revenue would come from exports.

“We envision to position Karnataka as a global innovation leader in AVGC-XR technologies, and create a robust talent pool by transforming the state into a centre of excellence for AVGC-related skills,” he said.

Karnataka accounts for 20% of India’s media and entertainment industry, employing more than 15,000 professionals, said the CM. It also has more than 300 specialised AVGC-XR studios, he added.

“GAFX is a step curated in the direction of celebrating, promoting and showcasing this industry, which has fast become the engine room for the global industry,” he said.

The GAFX, he said, was the perfect platform for the ecosystem to come together, deliberate the future and progress of the sector in India. “With a strong focus on skilling within the AVGC sector and innovation and adoption of emerging tech, these two aspects will be discussed across the many panels, master classes, roundtables and more, over the next three days,” he added.

The GAFX is an annual event organised by the government of Karnataka and the AVGC non-profit ABAI. The fifth edition of the event is being held in Bengaluru from January 29 to 31, and comes right on the heels of the state unveiling a draft AVGC-XR policy in November 2023 at the Bengaluru Tech Summit. This policy was built around six strategic pillars, each focusing on a different aspect of the AVGC-XR sectors, including skill development for a future-ready workforce, creation of sustainable infrastructure, empowering startups and MSMEs, provision for global market access and business development, incentives, concessions, and financial support, and focus on ‘mobile-first’ AVGC products.

“Back in 2012, Karnataka was the first state to launch an AVGC policy, which addresses the domestic and global need, as well as educational institutions dedicated to animation, visual effects, and gaming. These educational establishments constitute the lion’s share of India’s 139 institutes across these specialised fields,” the CM said.

The Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru is unique within the animation and visual effects industry, he added. It also facilitates employment opportunities with a finishing school to train and provide highly skilled creative technologists and technicians to AVGC companies in the state.

“The National Centre of Excellence, in fact, is strategized taking inspiration from the Karnataka Centre of Excellence and adopting the model on a national scale,” he said.
