Karol G Celebrates Historic First Grammy Win

Karol G is officially a Grammy-wining Bichota! On Sunday, the Colombian superstar accepted the award for Best Música Urbana Album for her 2023 LP Mañana Será Bonito.

“Hello everybody, my name is Karol G. I am from Medellín, Colombia. This is my first time at the Grammys, and this is my first time holding my own Grammy,” Karol said as she accepted the award. “I’m super happy, I’m super nervous, I’m super excited to be in front of so many legends that I admire and respect.”

“This is such a beautiful thing. My album has given me the best memories in my own life, my whole life — my fans that came and enjoyed my album, that gave motivation and inspiration and heal with me — thank you so much,” she continued. “I promise to give you my best always. And I hope that this is the first of so many. So thank you, everybody.”

Karol also thanked her fellow nominees Tainy and Rauw Alejandro as she walked off stage. (They were up for the award for Data and Saturno, respectively.) The singer accepted the award from Christina Aguilera and Maluma.

With the win, Karol made history as the first woman to receive the award in this category, which was added in 2022. Bad Bunny is the only other person to win the award, having taken it two years in a row for El Último Tour del Mundo and Un Verano Sin Ti.

One of the anomalies in this year’s nominations is that the Best Música Urbana Album category had only three names in it. The category received fewer than 40 entries.

La Bichota won the same award at the Latin Grammys last year, along with Album of the Year for Mañana Será Bonito. The LP included songs such as “Provenza,” “TQG” featuring Shakira, and “Mientras Me Curo del Cora.”

“The two weeks before the album came out, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat,” she told Rolling Stone for a cover story last year. “Being so exposed in my music was very psychologically heavy.… Imagine something like this happening, and you have to tell millions of people what happened to you.”
