What is Mumps?

Mumps is a viral infection caused by the spread of paramyxovirus. The virus can be spread through direct contact or airborne droplets from the upper respiratory tract of an infected person. -In Kerala, most of the cases of the virus have come from Malappuram district and other northern parts of the state.

-Apart from Kerala, other states have also reported mumps outbreaks over the past few months. Savadatti Yallamma town of Belagavi district in Karnataka reported 84 infections from the virus a few weeks ago, reported Hindustan Times. According to the health department, 84 children under the age of 12 have been infected till now.

-The virus is more common among children. For prevention, children can take the mumps-measles-rubella (MMR) vaccine against the disease, say health experts.

-People suffering from mumps are likely to experience pain, tenderness, and swelling in one/both parotid salivary glands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

– Swelling in the glands is maximum within one or three days. However, it diminishes itself within a week. There have been cases when the jawbone’s angle beneath the ear becomes obscured because of swelling.

-However, swelling on other salivary glands is quite uncommon in this infection and is complained by nearly 10% of the cases most of the time.

-Apart from swelling, people suffering from mumps infection can also experience mild fever lasting three to four days, muscle pain, loss of appetite, general discomfort, and headaches.

-Mumps infection may also cause symptoms related respiratory tract. In some cases, the infection can be completely asymptomatic.

-There are also chances of reinfection after a natural infection. In some cases, people can also develop recurrent parotitis.
