Kochi Water Metro ferries inaugurated last week have begun service in the High Court-Bolgatty-South Chittoor and the South Chittoor-Eloor-Cheranaloor corridors.

The services began on March 17 with ferries to South Chittoor starting operations from the High Court terminal at 7:45 am, 9:00 am, 5:20 pm and 6:45 pm. The return trips for the same are scheduled at 8:00 am, 8:50 am, 5:45 pm and 6:20 pm.

The ferries going to Cheranallore from South Chittoor will depart at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 1:15 pm, 2:45 pm and 4:15 pm with return trips at 10:38 am, 12:08 pm, 1:53 pm, 3:23 pm and 4:53 pm, as reported by The Hindu.

The timings for the ferries have been decided by the Kochi Water Metro Limited. The tickets are expected to be priced between Rs 20 and Rs 40 to travel in the AC electric-hybrid ferries. The cost may vary depending on the distance.

The new Water Metro services extending to more areas of Kochi were recently inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last week on Thursday. The primary aim of this expansion was to contribute towards a more sustainable transportation ecosystem. Considering the objective, a total of four new Water Metro terminals were opened at places including South Chittoor, Mulavukad North, Cheranelloor and Eloor.

The passenger services for the electric-hybrid water services were set to begin three days later on Sunday in the morning. Having virtually inaugurated the terminals via video conference, the Kochi CM said that the Water Metro service will likely provide a world-class travel experience to both tourists and local passengers. It will also help elevate the standard of living in coaching while benefiting over 1 lakh individuals. He further emphasized the significance of infrastructure development projects like national highways and waterways.

The Water Metro services were also praised by Industries Minister P Rajvee who said that the Water Metro will bring revolutionary changes to the islands of Kochi. He added that DTPC was also planning to launch a new boat service in the Kochi backwaters soon. He also announced an investment of Rs 94.5 lakh that had already been earmarked for the development of the Eloor ferry. The function also saw PWD Minister PA Mohamed Riyas, Revenue Minister K Ranjan and Mayor Anilkumar speak about the Water Metro expansion.

With the addition of these four new terminals, Kochi Water Metro’s current operation strength has increased to five routes spanning nine terminals.
