Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially inaugurated India’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata today, marking a major leap forward in the country’s infrastructure.
Kolkata’s New Underwater Metro: All You Need To Need
Length and Depth: The underwater metro stretches over 16.6 km, with approximately 10.8 km running underground from Howrah Maidan to Phoolbagan, including a tunnel beneath the Hooghly River. This makes it the deepest metro in the country, with the remaining portion above ground, as reported by Money Control.
Connecting Cities: A 4.8 km section links Howrah and Salt Lake, serving as a crucial connection between these two urban centers.
Station Layout: The metro comprises six stations, with three of them located underground.
Speed and Efficiency: Covering a 520 m river stretch in just 45 seconds, the underwater metro offers swift and efficient transportation for commuters.
Advanced Technology: The metro employs Automatic Train Operation (ATO), an advanced system where the train proceeds to the next station upon the motorman’s command.
Ticket Prices: Ticket prices for the underwater metro start at a mere Rs 5 for the initial two km, with incremental increases up to Rs 50.
While the segment between Esplanade and Sealdah is still under construction, the operational stretch from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah is already operational. Kolkata Metro aims to commence the full East-West route between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan by June or July.
In April 2023, Kolkata Metro achieved a historic feat by successfully running a train through the tunnel beneath the Hooghly River.
